Ingredients

  • 500 g minced beef
  • 1 small onion finely chopped for koftas
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 green chilies finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp gram flour
  • 1 tsp salt for koftas
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/4 cup fresh coriander chopped
  • 3 tbsp oil
  • 1 large onion finely chopped for the gravy
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste for the gravy
  • 3 tomatoes pureed
  • 1 tsp salt for the gravy
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 cups water

Method

  1. Squeeze the chopped onion dry in a cloth, then mix the mince with it, ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, gram flour, 1 tsp salt, garam masala and coriander. Knead until sticky and chill for 15 minutes. Shape into walnut-size balls.
  2. Heat the oil and cook the large onion until golden. Add the ginger-garlic paste and cook 1 minute.
  3. Add the tomato puree, salt, chili, coriander and turmeric. Cook for 8 to 10 minutes until the oil separates.
  4. Add the water and bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Drop in the koftas one by one. Cover and cook on low for 20 minutes without stirring for the first 5 minutes. Shake the pot gently to coat.
  6. Uncover and simmer for 5 minutes if the gravy is thin.
  7. Check that the koftas are cooked through, adjust the salt and serve hot.
